Axis Mundi

The axis mundi is understood mythologically as the center of the world;
connecting and providing a path between Heaven, Earth and the
Underworld. Existing in virtually all cultures, it is commonly
represented as a rope, tree, vine, ladder, pillar or staff. Similarly,
sacred geometries are considered to be patterns underlying the
structure of everything from Earth to Heaven. These geometric figures
can be found throughout nature, in snowflakes, the patterns of flower
petals, honeycombs and the shapes of galaxies. These are the origins of
forms, principles of oneness - a connective relationship between the
parts and the whole.

For this work, a hexagonal figure consisting of two opposing triangles
is used to encompass a rectangular pillar in the middle of the gallery
space. The hexagon was selected because of its ubiquity and importance
in various cultures and because, depending on its representation, it
can be seen as a flat geometric shape or expanded into three dimensions
as a cube. In this way, viewed from two specific angles, the column
appears either flat or transparent. The two triangles are colored with
magenta, cyan, green and the primary colors of red, yellow and blue.
Combined, both triangles complete a color circle, with which any color
can be deduced.
